Overview

When Porsche first introduced the Cayman S in 2005, fans of Stuttgart's finest rejoiced. Here was a hard top coupe version of the seminal Boxster that proved to be much more than just a 987 with a roof, and it was a huge hit. 

Mid-engined – check. Classic Porsche styling – check. Powerful six-cylinder engine – check. Confidence-inspiring handling – check. Excellent chassis dynamics – check. The original Cayman S was a proper sports car that feels as balanced and dynamic today as it did twenty years ago and it makes for an incredibly attractive second hand buy in 2025.

Consistently tweaked over its seven year production run the 987 Cayman S is arguably the purest and most engaging distillation of the 911's feisty little brother thanks in part to a whole host of analogue touches.

Initially available with a 3.4-litre flat-six boxer engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox the Cayman S had plenty of power (295bhp to be exact) but performance was upped to 316bhp in 2009 with the second gen model thanks to direct injection. A new seven-speed PDK gearbox became the de facto auto option and a limited-slip diff also joined the party making the 987.2 the one to have.

And that is exactly what we have available here: a 2011 Porsche 987.2 Cayman S in a particularly menacing black on black colour scheme. Complete with full service history and plenty of documented maintenance the car has clearly been fastidiously cared for and as such presents as a superb example of the marque.

Exterior

• The paint and bodywork are in excellent shape and the car appears to be free from any damage

• All panel gaps are uniform

• All glasswork appears to be free from damage aside from a chip to the windscreen which has has been professionally repaired

• There are a few minor stone chips commensurate with the car's age and mileage

• The original 19” alloy wheels have recently been refurbished and as such look to be in top condition but the Porsche logos on the centre caps are somewhat degraded

• The vendor states that the Pirelli P Zero tyres are reasonably new at the rear and the fronts still have a good few thousand miles left (approximately 2.5 – 3mm of tread)

• The car looks to be free from any major corrosion although there is some slight surface rust to the offside front lower wheel arch

• The vendor informs us that the car has been Waxoiled in the past

• The rear spoiler looks to be fully functional

Summary

When it comes to performance and cost the Cayman S consummately narrows the gap between the Boxster and the 911 and is the perfect Porsche for many. With plenty of grunt and superb driving dynamics it's a cracking sports car that can still very much hold its own today. The second gen models, like the one we have here, are considered more reliable and therefore more desirable, especially in this condition and they remain an incredibly tempting proposition for fans of those quintessential, classic Porsche characteristics.
