Overview

There's just something about a beefy estate car that gets the old petrolhead juices flowing. Audi set the template with the sublime RS2 Avant back in '94 and then Volvo surprised everyone by getting in on the action with the 850 T5-R. Then it was officially open season and everyone from Skoda to Mitsubishi were producing wacky wagons. The Americans even had a go with the Chrysler 300C Hemi wagon.

But, as Audi proved, the Germans have always been at the forefront when it comes to lunatic load luggers and the Mercedes E63 AMG is a case in point. The Mercedes E-Class is an institution at this point, having been around since the early '90s when it was first used as a naming convention for the face-lifted W124, and AMG have been involved ever since.

From the E50 in the mid nineties to the later E63s, AMG versions of M-B's beloved executive have consistently delivered and remain formidable machines that are just as popular now as they ever were, the 2007 E63 AMG being no exception.

In the case of the W211 its designers kept to the traditionally restrained brief but the AMG engineers went a little bonkers, dropping a snorting 6.2-litre, 510bhp V8 under the bonnet. These cars represent the high water mark of Stuttgart’s petrol-powered era and so originality is king, which is exactly the situation we have here.

Meticulously maintained and in fantastic factory condition throughout the car has recently benefited from over £11,000 of work, including a paintwork refresh, professional interior and engine bay valet and a range of comprehensive mechanical fettling that ensures all of those wonderful AMG features are in excellent health. Summary

If you're after a one-car-does-all solution then this Mercedes E63 AMG could be just the ticket. A real wolf in sheep’s clothing, it’s fast, comfortable and eminently usable. The last of the true naturally aspirated giants, the joy of an E63 is that, to the uninitiated, it appears much like a regular W211 E-Class, but turn the key and blip the throttle and you encounter something entirely different - one of the best examples of those aforementioned wunderwagons.
