Overview
To many of us, a mention of the PlayStation Generation conjures up imagery of youngsters playing motor racing games on video consoles.
The reality, though, is that the PlayStation Generation isn’t that young anymore. And if that’s not food for thought, then consider this: the first film in The Fast and the Furious franchise came out in 2001. That’s 24 years ago.
Combine these two factors and you’ll find the reason why a genuine UK-spec Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R is a quarter-of-a-million-pound car these days. It’s because buyers in their mid-forties are fighting for the keys to relive past glories, and the wealthier among them are dictating the prices. Nostalgia is a powerful drug…
The R34 was, after all, one of the true heroes of both the F&F franchise and Gran Turismo, so its status among automotive iconography is guaranteed. A JDM import GT-T won’t set you back as much as a UK-spec GT-R, but is nevertheless a desirable thing – especially if tastefully executed.
And you’re unlikely to find one more appealing than this if you’re looking for a Skyline with discreet performance. Modified to produce a little under 500bhp, it comes with a programmable Haltech ECU and a top-mounted Borg Warner turbo (a work of art in itself) and is a stunning-looking machine.
It has been in the UK since 2002 and was converted to manual transmission from automatic when it arrived here. The current vendor has had a 12-year love affair and has spent a fortune on it, but the arrival of some new motorbikes means it no longer gets the use it had in the past, so he’s reluctantly offering it for sale. An engineer by trade, he’s fastidiously maintained it and kept it in superb condition.

Summary
As far as Japanese performance cars go, the R34 Skyline is up there on the highest of pedestals – and quite rightly so. An icon of the early 2000s, it’s both striking to look at and achingly cool, as well as being a car that will be forever rooted in popular culture.
It’s fair to say that, with this car’s incredible specification and condition, the bidding is going to be both Fast and Furious, so don’t be the one to miss out. “Dude, I almost had you” will not make you the winner…
