Overview
While the late 2000s was very much an evolutionary period for the car industry, with lower capacity turbocharged engines seemingly the name of the game in order to make performance match emissions, there was the occasional rebel that didn’t follow the pack.
One of those was BMW’s M-Division – where convention was never a barrier to engineering brilliance. Here, at the company’s performance HQ in Garching, just outside Munich, cars that stray from the norm have been made for decades. And we’re extremely grateful for that – to our mind, there has never been a bad M-Car per se; just varying degrees of greatness.
The E90/92/93 generation of M3 is regarded by many as one of the best. It’s arguably one of BMW’s most complete M-Cars. Normally aspirated and powered by a thumping longitudinally mounted V8, it’s a car that not only delivers sensational performance, but also brings with it a real sense of occasion, not to mention an intoxicating soundtrack.
The V8 engine is a masterpiece - a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre unit that will rev eagerly to 8,300rpm and develop its maximum 414bhp at that point – an 80bhp increase over its E46 predecessor.
Fed to the road via a beautifully balanced rear-drive chassis, the M3 will rocket from 0-60mph in only 4.5 seconds, yet still enjoys great balance, grip and control. It’s a polished performer, but one that can still put on a sideways spectacle if you need it to, which, let’s face it, is what M3s have always been rather good at.
This one is an E92 – BMW speak for the coupé model – and in Competition spec is the most desirable of M3 variants of the era. It comes with BMW’s ultra-fast seven-speed DCT sequential manual transmission and has covered less than 20,000 miles from new, making it an ideal collectors’ car as well as a fantastic weekend plaything.

The 2025 service was an inspection 2, along with a differential service and oil analysis to check for any rod bearing damage – and we’re pleased to say that there was no indication of any damage
-
In the oil analysis, the vendor reports that some petrol was noted in the oil. This was suspected to be down to a failing spark plug, as prior to service on one cylinder the engine recorded an occasional misfire. The inspection 2 service included a change of all eight spark plugs and the vendor reports that it now runs very nicely indeed
Summary
In an age of increasing restrictions, BMW’s decision to stick with a beefy V8 was a bold one, but one that made the E90/92 generation of M3 that little bit more special. There are many ways of making cars go faster, but as the old American saying goes “there’s no replacement for displacement”.
While generations of automotive engineers have proven that statement isn’t entirely true, who can deny the appeal of a small-ish car with a big-ish V8, an M-tuned chassis and an exhaust note that sounds like its gargling on gravel? Not us, that’s for sure.
