Rear-wheel drive
Overview
There was a time when most cars were rear-wheel drive. And anything that wasn’t had probably been dreamed up in France after somebody’s four-hour, wine-infused lunch break. But sadly those days are long gone. If it’s not the industry-standard front-wheel configuration, then your car probably has all-wheel drive, which is measurably, empirically, demonstrably better in every way.
But some things can’t be measured: things like ‘fun’, ‘flair’, and ‘un-frenchness’. And BMW has long understood this, ensuring that the traditional rear-wheel drive layout remains present on our roads, and not just the preserve of an exclusive group of high-end vehicles. So we salute them for giving the world a rear-wheel drive hatchback in the form of the 1-series.
And this is a particularly desirable example. The M140i is a small car with big car aspirations. Its twin-scroll turbocharger feeds its three-litre straight-six engine to an output of 330 bhp — which is about 300 more horses than your standard family car might produce back when most cars were rear-wheel drive.
The car we see here also benefits from a long list of upgrades to improve its appearance, ride, and handling. The engine and transmission are standard, but the suspension has been treated to Eibach lowering springs, and PowerFlex rear subframe bushes. A limited-slip differential has been fitted (at a cost £1,500).
Exterior upgrades included plenty of carbon fibre trim pieces, a carbon front splitter, black badges, and carbon exhaust tips. The Sapphire Black paint is a very attractive choice of colour, and remains very well presented.
Overall, this M140i has fantastic road presence, with its lowered stance and carbon trim. And it has the handling upgrades to go with it. So you can enjoy all the benefits of those driven rear wheels to their fullest.
