Overview
According to the dusty leather-bound tomes we keep in the archives at PistonHeads, the Maserati 3200 GT was a rare beast even when new. Fewer than 5,000 had been produced by the time production ceased in 2002, so now nearly a quarter of a century later it’s nearly as rare as poultry dentists. In fact, according to the internet, there are only 87 examples still taxed in Great Britain.
But this small number of cars was enough to revive the fortunes of the Maserati corporation, who had been somewhat stuck in the past until this point, stylistically at least. The rounded body work of the 3200 GT brought the company across the millennium threshold and into what we no longer call ‘the future’.
Perhaps the most important design decision made by Maserati was that their flagship model needed to have a V8 engine. In fact this point probably wasn’t even discussed at all, it would have just been assumed. And this 3,217 cc V8 engine is turbocharged to produce 365 bhp and 362 lb ft of torque, which is enough to get it up to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds.
The example we see here dates from 1999, the first year when an automatic transmission was an option. It comes with a sizeable history folder with plenty of reassuring recent servicing having been completed. Big-ticket items like the timing belt, water pump, air conditioning bits, front brakes and crossmember have all been replaced in the past few years.
If you’re looking for a sleek and suave way to burble your way around then this Maserati is exactly what you want. And when you want to go on a grand tour, it’ll happily do what it was designed for, with room for both humans and luggage and plenty of grunt to get you across continents.

Summary
If we were about to drive down to the Italian Riviera, then the list of cars we’d be thinking of taking would be pretty long. But somewhere near the top would be a V8 Maserati. There’s something indescribably alluring about the idea of wafting through Tuscany in a trident-fronted grand tourer with a blue leather interior. With sage nods of approval from the local grape-pickers and café waiters.
