Overview

“Hey America, how are you doing? You okay? I just wanted to check in because, er… well this appears to be… *checks notes* …yes, a near 2.5-tonne pick-up truck with the 500bhp 8.3-litre V10 from a Viper… Oh. It is? 4.9 seconds you say? Intriguing.”

For those not in the know about mid-00s performance pick-up trucks and other forms of trans-Atlantic lunacy, this is indeed the result of a Dodge engineer looking at a RAM truck and a Viper in the company car park and going “hold on lads, I’ve got an idea…”

But as unhinged as that idea may sound to European tastes, we have to admit, it’s gloriously, stupidly brilliant. Do you need a 500bhp pick-up truck? No of course you don’t. No one does. But do you want a 500bhp pick-up truck? Well, durrrr.

We’re talking about something that makes a Range Rover look small, that throbs, bellows and barks like some kind of petrol-powered grizzly bear, has roughly as much thrust as a Saturn V rocket and weighs as much as Blenheim Palace. It makes no sense at all. Which is what makes it so utterly fantastic. We wish more car manufacturers had Dodge’s maverick spirit and sense of humour, and make no mistake about it, this is a lot of fun. The kind of vehicle that elicits a wide grin at every nudge of the loud pedal and starts conversations everywhere you go.

Oh yes, and it will hammer past 60mph in less than 5 seconds and batter its way through 150mph given the room (and bravery). Which is, as we may have intimated, utterly mad.

Obviously, you’re not going to be lugging sheets of 8x4 plasterboard in this (although you could - and it would get there awfully quickly), but as a slice of highly collectible automotive ephemera, it’s near unsurpassed. Particularly on this side of the pond – when was the last time you saw one at a show, let alone on the road?

Think of it this way: for those of us who would love a Viper but have kids, dogs and assorted other detritus of life that we have to lug about, Dodge have solved our problem. We can now own a Viper. Kind of.

Thank you, Dodge. You absolute mentalists.

Summary

Presented in good overall condition, this RAM SRT-10 is very much an exotic rarity on UK roads. With the beating heart of a Viper and the space of a large double-cab pick-up, the SRT-10 offers significantly more practicality and usability than you might expect.

Clearly designed with a sense of humour (and, we suspect, a glass or three of Bourbon), it’s exactly the kind of delightfully bonkers machine that could only ever come from America. And we love it for that, the automotive world is a better place for having this kind of thing in it.

If you’re after something rare and fun to light up your weekends – or your daily commute, if you’re our kind of superhero – not much will come close to the RAM SRT-10 for impact and pure drama. One thing’s for sure, whoever walks away with this thunderously powerful pick-up is going to have the time of their life…
