Overview
Volkswagen has a long tradition of celebrating milestone birthdays with ‘edition’ cars. And the Edition 40 - also known as the MK7 Golf GTI Clubsport - was no exception. Marketed to owners as a collectors’ item from the word go, with marketing suggesting that you should buy two, one to drive and one to keep. The Clubsport was lighter and cleverer than its R-badged ‘big’ brother, thanks to a significant weight reduction of over 100kg, a more complex and intelligent chassis, and a claimed 10% stiffer spring rate.
Purchased by the seller in March 2019, this example boasts a hefty power upgrade to just shy of 400bhp thanks to a rolling road remap by VRS Performance - the process and commentary for which has been video–documented. It comes with a number of tasteful supporting modifications and upgrades, meaning this Clubsport out-guns both the R and the more track-focused Clubsport S, all whilst retaining the usability of a five-door Golf with rear seats.
Offered for sale in very good condition throughout and with the added provenance of being chassis 001 of 1,000 this Clubsport would make an excellent addition to any marque enthusiast or collectors garage, and would make for a formidable daily driver, weekend toy or trackday weapon.

-
The rear seats are in excellent shape, with only some minor scuffs noted to the outer edge of the offside rear seat base
-
There are some light usage marks to the high-traffic areas such as the shifter, door sill covers, lower dashboard plastics and steering wheel
-
The Alcantara steering wheel has faded and gone ‘flat’ as is typical of this material
-
In the rear, the spare wheel is present under the boot floor, and the boot generally presents well
-
Looking closer, we have noted a few scuffs to the boot plastic trims, as well as a more notable patch of scratches at the top of the boot trim under the spoiler
-
No reported faults
-
Overall, a very well-presented cabin for a car that has just shy of 100,000 miles on the odometer, which is testament to careful usage and VW’s build quality of the MK7-era Golf
Exterior
-
Resplendent in white with contrasting black roof, mirrors and Clubsport graphics, this Ed40 presents in very good order
-
The front end and mirror caps exhibit the usual stone chips and light marks typical of a high-performance vehicle
-
All four wheels present well, though the two rear wheels exhibit some light kerb rash and lacquer damage
-
The seller notes that both rear tyres are likely to need replacement in the near future, though they are ‘serviceable’ for now
-
Elsewhere, there is a larger scuff below the NS front washer jet on the bumper, a few small scuffs on the upper edge of the rear bumper, and the rear towing eye cover has been scratched
-
A fastidious owner may wish to have the car machine polished to remove the swirl marks visible in direct sunlight, though this is largely hidden in day-to-day use
-
In general, this is a very smart example of the limited-run Edition 40 that any owner could be proud of

Summary
The Golf GTI is arguably the genesis for all hot hatches, and this limited-run Edition 40 Clubsport model remains true to the original MK1’s ethos of everyday usability with plenty of smiles for the driver when the opportunity arises. This particular example benefits from a significant bump in power thanks to a remap from a well-regarded marque specialist, along with a number of considerate performance upgrades and supporting modifications.
