Overview

The Porsche 911 for sale here isn’t just any 911. It’s a 997, which means we can look at it through our nostalgically rose-tinted spectacles, especially as this particular car is going to be celebrating its twentieth birthday this year. And it isn’t just any 997. It’s a Carrera S, which means it has a 3.8-and-a-bit litre flat-six engine mounted astern. And it isn’t just any Carrera S. It has the Sport Chrono package (cue ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’), more on which below. 

This optional Sport Chrono package presents the driver and passengers with a dashboard-mounted chronometer, with which to measure lap times. But also — and perhaps more importantly — it also comes with a slightly sharpened throttle response in ‘Sport’ mode, and allows a little more direct driver involvement by raising the limit at which the traction control (Porsche Stability Management) kicks in. 

So despite its age, this 997 certainly isn’t over the hill yet. It can happily hold its own on the road, and looks great doing so. The styling is simple and understated, yet it retains a sense of quiet confidence and purpose. 

A sizeable history folder accompanies the car, and you’ll be buying it from somebody who has been its custodian for the past 15 years. So it has been maintained and enjoyed as a long-term investment, rather than a disposable toy.

It is finished in an attractively smart shade of silver, with only the red brake callipers adding a flamboyant splash of colour to the scene. The interior is similarly well designed, with everything you need for an enjoyable journey, whether that’s to the shops or to the South of France.

• Underneath, there is some corrosion on the exhaust and some of the suspension components, as usual 

• New fan belt and three idler pulleys fitted in Aug 2023

• The most recent service stamp is dated Jun 2024, and indicates that ‘minor maintenance’ was carried out 

• A new battery was supplied by the RAC 

• The seller tells us that the tyre pressure system has an intermittent fault, which has not yet been investigated 

• It is said to start easily, run well, rev smoothly, and brakes well

• Sports exhaust reportedly fitted, which provides a good sound without being too loud
