Overview

It’s a known fact that fast estates are the ultimate in day-to-day transportation for any car enthusiast, and the Audi Avant (complete with RS badge) is surely the ultimate iteration of the genre. Available in full-fat RS6 or svelte - but still wonderfully practical - RS4 format, it is the latter that we’ll be looking at here today, and it looks to be a corker…

The B7-generation RS4 was unveiled in 2006, and achieved a rare success story in the automotive world in that it received rave reviews from journalists, and also sold in strong numbers; rarely do those two things intersect in the real world.

Built during the time that many will look back on with rose-tinted glasses as the heyday of the German car industry in the modern era, and arguably Audi’s golden age of design, manufacturing and product range, the B7 RS4 blends a sensational naturally aspirated V8 engine with genuine practicality and usability, in both saloon and estate form. That lovely V8 could also be enjoyed in all weathers thanks to its Quattro all-wheel drive system, a party trick that put it above rivals such as the C63 AMG or BMW E90 M3 in the ‘everyday driver’ stakes.

Purchased by the seller in February 2024, this well-specified RS4 Avant has been spared no expense during his ownership, with plenty of both remedial and preventative works carried out, including the all-important walnut blasting to help de-coke the engine - a must-do for any B7 owner. It still maintains its factory-spec ride quality due to original DRC dampers and, for peace of mind, comes with a spare set.

Having been used and enjoyed for just over a year and seemingly cossetted throughout this time, this RS4 is now looking for a new owner - could it be you?

  • A major ‘100k mile’ service was carried out in May 2024

  • The auxiliary belt and tensioner were replaced by  P&G Automotive

  • The clutch pedal switch, both cam cover gaskets, both upper/lower suspension arms, front discs and pads, and the rear wiper arm were replaced in Feb 2024

  • In April 2024, the inlet manifold O-rings, water pump, and OSR shock absorber were replaced, along with a suspension system recharge

  • The steering rack was removed and replaced with an item from a ‘20k mile’ car in Oct 2024

  • The airbag recall has been carried out and the seller tells us that there are no recalls outstanding
  • Prior to our vendor’s ownership, the clutch, flywheel and slave cylinder were replaced in May 2019

  • The seller notes that a spare set of OE shock absorbers are included with the car, as is the OE navigation unit

Interior

  • A fantastic example of Audi’s ‘golden era’ of interior design, which has stood the test of time very well indeed

  • Desirable RS4-branded Recaro ‘Wingback’ seats

  • BOSE sound system with upgraded Pioneer stereo unit featuring Apple CarPlay

  • The high-traffic areas such as the headlight switch, shifter and switchgear exhibit a level of wear commensurate with the car’s age and mileage

  • The rear seats show a few small marks and imperfections, as well as some noticeable ‘bunching’ to the leather on the armrest / middle seat

  • Both front seats are in great condition, with only a light usage patina to note

  • The hard-shell rears of both front seats are marked with a number of scuffs

  • A relic of a bygone era, the mount for the in-car phone remains affixed to the dashboard

  • In the rear, the boot is tidy throughout with a few expected marks to the plastic trims, whilst the cover for the 12v socket is missing

  • The first aid kit is present-and-correct

  • There are no reported faults from the seller

Exterior

  • Resplendent in black, this RS4 Avant still commandeers plenty of attention almost 20 years after it first hit the roads

  • The bodywork is in very good condition throughout, with any major parking dents attended to in Feb 2025

  • The seller notes that the front bumper was painted in Feb 2024

  • The rear bumper was painted Feb 2025

  • Looking closer, we can see that there appears to be a section of ‘orange peel’ in the paintwork along the nearside, from the front passenger door blending into the nearside front wing

  • Elsewhere, there are the usual stone chips to the front end, and a light smattering of marks to the rear bumper

  • When viewed in direct sunlight, a number of swirl marks can be seen in the paintwork, though these could likely be remedied by a skilled detailer

  • Both headlights have been replaced in the current ownership due to water ingress

  • All four wheels are in excellent condition, save for one small area of kerb rash documented in the gallery

  • Pirelli P-Zero tyres on all four wheels, with the seller stating the rears were new at the time of purchasing the car (Feb 2024) and the front tyres have “less than 500 miles” of wear

Mechanical

  • 4,163cc naturally aspirated V8 engine rated at420bhp @ 7,800rpm and 317 lb-ft of torque @ 5,500rpm

  • Six-speed Getrag manual gearbox, sending power to all four wheels via Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system

  • There are no reported modifications to the car’s original factory specification

  • Sonorous and howling when worked and yet retaining a subtle, bassy note on idle, this is one of Audi’s best V8 engines

  • Under the bonnet, the engine presents in fine fettle, with everything in its right-and-proper place and no signs of any untoward issues

  • The seller states that this RS4 starts with ease and drives “exceptionally well” and that there are no mechanical faults or foibles to report

Summary

This B7 RS4 Avant is a modern classic you can justify from both a ‘head’ and a ‘heart’ perspective. Your head will be satisfied that it’s practical, modern enough to be comfortable, safe, well-maintained, and can haul a family of 4 with ease; your heart will be happy with the sound of its V8 engine, immensely usable power band, the fact it looks sensational and the childish glee you’ll get from pressing the starter button on the centre console.

Maintained irrespective of cost by the current owner and boasting the all-important (and now very desirable) Recaro ‘Wingback’ seats, we can think of few better suggestions for anyone looking for a family wagon that can still make you grin like a Cheshire cat on your favourite B roads, or devour a cross-continental road trip like the Cookie Monster eating… well, cookies! Go on, you know you want to…
