Overview

Back when politicians all had immensely thick glasses and most had previously been parachuted behind enemy lines during ‘the’ war, the four-door coupe was the bee’s knees. Specifically the Rover P5B, which combined solid British solidness with solid American V8-ness. This car served as countless ministers’ official transport, and became a Downing Street regular. 

And while the coupe body style has largely disappeared from showrooms, that doesn’t mean it’s not still a fabulous all-rounder. And to make things even more omni-useful, the S5 we see here is a ‘Sportback’, which means it has a large lifting rear tailgate. So when you need to transport something irregularly shaped, which doesn’t conform to the usual human or suitcase dimensions, you can still open up the cavernous boot and slot it in. 

All this is a very long-winded way of saying we think the S5 is not just a fast and fun car to drive, but it’s the kind of car you can actually live with, too. Add to this the plush diamond-stitched leather interior, swanky infotainment screen, and all-wheel drive which can do clever things to serve up power where it’s most needed. 

So yes, if you’re a normal person who does normal things, the S5 Sportback is all the car you’ll ever need. More than quick enough, beautifully appointed and attractive in a coolly understated way, it’s capable of brightening up your motoring life as well as making your daily commute that bit more enjoyable. And when it’s cold and wet — a rare occurrence in these fair isles — you have the reassurance that the Quattro system has got your back. Overall, the car is a turbocharged V6 blue bombshell, ideal for enjoying yourself on the back roads, as well as everyday comfortable driving down the motorway with family and friends.

Summary

With its rakishly swept rear lines, this Navarra Blue example is a very attractive S5. Add to this its turbocharged three-litre V6 engine and all-wheel drive, and you have yourself a very enjoyable way of getting from A to B as well as a practical day to day car.
