Overview
The third generation of ‘new’ Minis is the one that really ushered the ubiquitous hatch into the modern era. (Although we should probably stop calling them ‘new’; the classic Mini went out of production in 2000 with the R50 arriving a year later, and a 24-year-old badge is far from new...!)
The first-gen BMW Mini was a lovely thing that sported a Brazilian-built Tritec engine, the second-gen R56 had a ‘Prince’ engine shared with Peugeot-Citroën, but the car you see here, the third-generation: that’s all BMW. Pick through the cabin and pore over the chassis, you’ll find BMW part numbers on everything, and the engines were all BMW too. In the case of this Cooper, that’s a B38 motor, a turbo 3-cylinder which (pub boast at the ready) is closely related to the one found in the BMW i8 hybrid sports car.
So, we know we’re looking at something solid, reliable and well-built. And in the case of this 2015 Cooper, we’re actually looking at something that’s a whole lot more than that. You see, this fastidiously maintained car – which is in all-original spec and lovely condition throughout – has covered just 15,500 miles from new. That’s an average of around 1500 miles a year throughout its life, but even so it’s been religiously serviced every year regardless of mileage.
It all speaks of an owner who has evidently cherished and doted upon this car – it’s something they didn’t necessarily need to own, they just wanted to, and it’s been looked after like one of the family. It’s also worth noting that the options list was generously ticked when this Mini was new, as the car features the expansive double glass pano roof as well as the wider central dash screen option and JCW steering wheel. You’re probably unlikely to find a more impressive 2015 Cooper on today’s market, this truly is something special.

Summary
The third-gen Mini (known as ‘F56’ in this three-door guise) is a real class act. The fit-and-finish feels a level above that which you’d usually find in its hatchback rivals; the seats are sumptuous, the controls have a pleasing weight, the doors close with a solid thunk. Everything about it is just that little bit better than you’d expect it to be, and that makes for a very satisfying ownership proposition every day. The Cooper is surprisingly affordable to run too: that TwinPower Turbo motor can return over 60mpg, and did you know that the VED is only £20 a year?
And this particular car... well, this is a cut above. When it was first ordered, it was evidently specced by someone who wanted to take that sense of class and quality and move it a step forward, with the larger dash screen making the fundamental controls that bit easier, and the panoramic roof opening up the cabin to the sky. The fact that it’s only covered 15,500 miles since 2015 is amazing, and the painstaking service history is frankly extraordinary. If you’ve been looking around for an F56 Cooper, you can stop searching. You’ve found it.
