Overview

When you absolutely smash something, nailing the brief perfectly, how do you improve on it? Consider that Orson Welles never quite stepped out of the shadow of Citizen Kane, and Guns’n’Roses never quite recaptured the swaggering belligerence of Appetite for Destruction.

We can only imagine the consternation in Nissan’s engineering department when word came down that they had to improve on the R34. How does one even begin to improve on something so capable, so devastatingly ahead of its time and so ingrained in popular culture?

As it turns out, by focussing on improving every single aspect of the car. Yes, it ended up in a different place to the R34. But that’s because no aspect was untouched, no component too small to consider. Nissan’s boffins got their very smallest-toothed comb out and really went to town.

The result? A car you could buy for £60k that wouldn’t embarrass supercars costing four or five times as much. No, it would humiliate them. Devastate them. Crush them to fine powder and laugh. And it would do it over, and over, and over again. With bomb-proof reliability. And with running costs a fraction of that of the usual supercar rivals. We haven’t even begun to mention the insane tuning scene either, where reliable, usable 1,000bhp+ monsters are regularly turned out.

Little wonder that the R35 is held in such high esteem. This example is finished in shimmering Daytona Blue Metallic and the seller believes that it benefits from an AC Speed Tech 4.25 remap which reportedly delivers 660bhp, representing a modest tune but nothing too outrageous.

With low mileage, a great service history and a lovely specification, if you’ve always hankered after a slice of Japanese automotive royalty, then there are few better ways to experience it than this.

Summary

It’s a damn shame that the R35 is no longer for sale as a new car. Years after its launch, it still ranks as one of the finest driving machines on the planet.

Of course, that means that now is the perfect time to get your hands on one. They’re only going to get rarer and more collectable.

Even the briefest glance at this car and its excellent history show clearly that it’s been adored and lavished with care. Precisely the kind of car that makes the wisest and most satisfying purchase.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, dismiss the R35 at your peril – this is a gorgeous, wonderfully well maintained example of an incredible machine. One day we’ll look back on this as one of the all-time greats, and that day may be sooner than you think…
