Overview

In the Venn diagram of life, the crossover point containing the best of all worlds is usually vanishingly small. But in this case, it’s about the size of a small French hatchback. This is because we’re looking at a Renaultsport Clio 200, a car which is as happy ferrying the kids to school as it is whipping you around a track at the weekend. 

Renault clearly put a lot of thought and track time into the design of the suspension setup for this particular Clio, so when this was combined with their 200 hp naturally-aspirated engine, it made for a hugely successful combination. This is a car which you can jump into and tackle a track without having to break out the spanners and tinker with scary things like suspension geometry. Unless you’re into that kind of thing. 

This particular example benefits from having a well-stamped service book, accompanied by the vendor’s own comprehensive service records showing you just how well it has been cared for. It is said to run beautifully, with that 200 hp engine being eager to pick up the revs and show you what it can do with them. 

The silver paintwork allows you to pass under the radar without attracting any unwanted attention. And the odd scuff and scratch has been thoughtfully added so you won’t have to worry about parking in a crowded supermarket car park ever again. You’ll want any excuse you can find to drive this fabulous little Clio, even if that involves doing the weekly shop.

Summary

In all, this is a very useable example of a proper hot hatch. Renaultsport cars have a loyal following in the UK, and for good reason: they’re powerful, fast, and light. The Clio 200 may be more grown up than some of its predecessors, but that means you can get out and enjoy it more often, which can only be a good thing.
