Overview

The first-generation R8 was a watershed moment for Audi; this was their first production ‘supercar’ on the world stage, and it took the media by storm - even the legendary Jackie Ickx stated that it was the “best handing road car [available] today” when it was released.

Available with either a 4.2-litre V8 or 5.2-litre V10 engine, the R8 was based upon the Lamborghini Gallardo platform, and if you’re looking for a little pub quiz trivia, the R8 was the first production car to use full-LED headlights.

This example is the former - a 4.2-litre V8-equipped R8, finished in a classical combination of black over a cream interior. For those that fear the R8’s Magnaride suspension system (due to its troublesome reputation) you’re in luck, as this particular R8’s system has been removed in favour of a conventional spring-and-damper setup, removing a potentially costly failure point, making it a strong contender for anyone looking to obtain a high-performance supercar that is genuinely usable in day-to-day life.

• Cream leather interior in good overall condition
• The seats show some light outer bolster wear, particularly on the driver’s side
• There are some small marks on the lower edges of the door card
• The passenger door pull shows some damage at the base, whilst the driver’s door pull is worn at the top
• Optional B&O sound system fitted
• The touchpoints and high-traffic areas are in good order with no heavy wear noted
• Our photographer noted a faint smell of cigarette smoke within the car so perhaps an ozone clean or smoke bomb will rectify
• Down below, the floor mats and carpets would benefit from a valeting, and the seller has confirmed that it will be professionally valeted, including leather conditioning, upon successful completion of a sale
• There are no reported faults with any of the switches or systems

Exterior

• Presented in black with black wheels, this R8 cuts a mean figure, with the design language still looking fresh to this day
• The paintwork on the front end exhibits some typical stone chips and light wear
• We noted some light blemishes and scratches on the offside rear wing, particularly below the outermost parking sensor
• All four wheels are in good condition with only minor marks, wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero tyres which are said to have plenty of life left
• Both headlights are slightly misted in the photographs as a result of being jetwashed on an icy morning
• Carbon-look side blades show some puckering around the outer edges
• The lower sills and rear edges of all four wheel arches exhibit commensurate road rash
• We can see no sign of any impact damage, and there have been no reported or recorded accidents with the vehicle
• The vehicle will receive a full stage 1 polish before hand over

Mechanical

• 4.2-litre FSI V8 engine
• Semi-automatic S-Tronic automated manual gearbox
• Rear-biased Audi Quattro all-wheel-drive
• The engine bay presents well, with no signs of any obvious faults
• The OE Magnaride suspension system has been replaced with a conventional suspension setup for improved reliability
• All four tyres are reported to be wearing evenly with plenty of life left
• The seller reports that there is plenty of life left in the brake discs and pads

Summary

As far as daily-driveable supercars go, you’d be hard-pushed to beat an Audi R8.
