Overview
While nothing can be taken away from the Peugeot 205 GTI, which was the French firm’s original hot hatch and will always be an icon, those with an edgier, more controversial mindset might go as far as to say it wasn’t the best hot hatch to ever wear the famous roaring lion badge.
After all, the 1990s were very much Peugeot’s purple patch, with sporty models from the raw and basic 106 Rallye right up to the plush 405 Mi16 providing performance in all shapes and sizes.
Those edgy people may have a point, too, for while the 306 GTI-6 will never have the raw, original appeal of the 205 GTI, it’s arguably the better car – certainly one with better handling and peakier performance, plus an air of refinement that some of Peugeot’s sportier models of the era could only dream of. You’ll not find Recaro leather sports seats and a six-CD changer in a 106 Rallye, after all.
Yet that refinement didn’t come at the expense of driver appeal. Far, far from it. Wonderful handling, an eager, rev-hungry 16-valve engine and an addictive, short-throw manual transmission with one more gear than almost every car on sale at the time (and two more than some) made the GTI-6 something very special indeed.
Today, it’s a rare car, its attrition rate accelerated by years of buyers with more ambition than talent, those with a leaning towards adorning their cars with hideous body kits and TV screens in an epoch-defining manner (oh how the cruise era led to such butchery) and the natural wear and tear of a model that – alarmingly to some of us – made its debut 30 years ago.
This car, then, is very special indeed. A ‘Phase 3’ 306 GTI-6 from the penultimate year of 306 production, it’s an absolute gem of a car – as developed as the 306 could be, yet as delicate and handsome as it had always been.
It’s in wonderful condition, features a great specification, has extensive history, a genuine low mileage and hasn’t been horrendously modified, with just a few tweaks known to improve the already well-honed handling and performance.
With 167bhp from its 2.0-litre 16-valve engine and with just 1,214Kg to push along, it’s a fine-handling and eager machine.
The vendor bought the car last year via this very platform, its previous custodian a well-known YouTuber, and even though it was an absolute peach back then he’s improved it further since, spending upwards of £7k on rebuilt axles, a sophisticated brake upgrade and a Stage 2 tuning kit with fast road cams, to name a few.
For sale only due to an unexpected change in the vendor’s personal circumstances, it’s a great chance for you to buy what has to be one of the very best GTI-6s left on the road.
