Overview
Large, high-performance luxury coupés became the answer to a question that we suspect nobody ever asked during the mid-2010s, with models such as the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide and Audi RS7 Sportback creating a new market niche, in which über-performance met the pinnacle of luxury.
It’s of little surprise, then, that Mercedes-Benz was quick to join the party. After all, the marque has a tradition of discretion, but with a naughty side thrown in.
Cars don’t get much naughtier than those with a properly earned AMG badge, either. Originally a standalone company specialising in extracting maximum performance out of the three-pointed star, since 1999, AMG has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz GmbH, and with that its original lunacy was often diluted to as little as a badge, some alloys and sportier trim on the company’s lesser models.
Over at AMG HQ in Affalterbach, however, some truly special cars have still been created, the sleepy village north of Stuttgart often having its peace broken by the sound of a screaming V8 being fired up in a factory where cars are still built by men and women, rather than robots, using manual tools and proper crafts. Only the very finest AMG models are assembled there these days; the ones that are too bespoke or a little too bonkers to be finished off down the road in Stuttgart. This one is one of them.
Introduced in 2018, the four-door Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Coupé is not to be confused with the similarly named and powered Mercedes-AMG GT, which uses the same engine but on a different platform, and with a two-door sports GT body. Try telling that to the internet, though, as searching for the former more often than not brings up the latter – it seems the four-door GT is so under-the-radar that you actively have to look for it.
At PistonHeads, we love cars built by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts, and which draw you into an exclusive club by virtue of their existence. And make no mistake, this is an enthusiast’s car for many reasons, from the flourished signature on the engine cover, to the subtly shifting interior mood lighting and the sonorous draw of that babbling V8, which feeds its power to all four wheels via a nine-speed sequential transmission.
Just ask the vendor. He’s owned this car longer than he has any other, and he’s had some pretty tasty stuff during his driving career, as a chat while we were taking the photos determined. This is a man who grew up with a Honda NSX in his dad’s garage, so he knows a good car when he sees one – and he’s still sitting on the fence by selling this one. The reason? He wants an Audi RS6 before they stop making them with a proper V8 under the bonnet. In a rapidly shifting automotive landscape, amen to that.
Now, then, is your chance to get your hands on what was a very expensive car when new, and which remains a mightily impressive car today.

Summary
Despite its two-tonne weight, the AMG GT 63 Coupé remains one of only a handful of four-door cars to lap the Nürburgring in less than seven-and-a-half minutes. That’s supercar-quick. The fact you can still use it on the school run or take it down the golf club, such is its practicality, is a mere bonus. That makes it a pretty special car on many levels.
There aren’t many of these on the used market – after all, they were almost Bentley money when new – so the chance to get your hands on one is a rare thing. Here’s an opportunity to get one that’s been well looked-after and is in great condition. Tempted? We know. So are we.
