Overview

Sometimes you need a big car. Sometimes you just want a big car. And BMW have an answer to both of these callings in the form of the X5. (Yes there’s an X7 as well, but that’s an enormous car, which is a category all of its own.) This long-established model first appeared on our roads way back at the end of the last millennium, and has been with us ever since — a steadfast piece of the automotive landscape.

In the intervening 25 years lesser cars have come and gone, while the X5 has been sitting imperiously at the top of the tree, confident in its own self, unfazed by the changing world around it. The basic formula has remained the same: being big, being quick, and being able to take up to seven passengers across a muddy field in comfort. Or, to put it in more PH terms, carrying a bootful of tools and spares and towing your competition car.

The example we see here is powered by a straight-six engine coupled to an eight-speed transmission, with 313 bhp on hand to be delivered to all four wheels as required. It allows you to chew up the Autobahn kilometres at an alarming rate, while relaxing into the comfort of a well-sprung leather seat.

Onboard service history indicates that this X5 has been well cared for, and is backed up by accompanying paperwork. So you can load the car up with seven people and a pile of luggage/ spare back axle and your trolley jack, and hit the road. It’s the perfect family load-lugger, support vehicle and tow car, all wrapped up in one smart package.

• The seller reports that in the recent period of cold weather, the parking brake has a failure light on the dash and is not engaging/disengaging; a manual reset may be possible

Summary

The X5 does everything on a reasonably grand scale. Oozing confidence and road-presence, yet somehow able to pass by without raising any eyebrows, it’s an ideal do-it-all vehicle.

This one is nicely looked after and has a punchy but frugal diesel motor. You’ll probably want something more focused to tow behind it but for pretty much every other use, this X5 has it covered.
