Overview
There are many fast cars in the world, just as there are many pretty cars and many luxurious cars. How many can truly claim to be all three though? And how many of those can carry four adults in comfort and still allow them to enjoy the thrill of open-top driving?
It’s a very short list. But if we were the ones making it, the Maserati Grancabrio would be very high on that list indeed. The mystique and iconic nature of that legendary trident can’t be emphasised enough – Maserati are one of the few brands with heritage to rival Ferrari. Add to that the kind of swooping, elegant and perfectly proportioned bodywork that only comes from the likes of Pininfarina, and you have the makings of something very special.
This particular example is a ‘Sport’ model, which means you get an evocative, naturally aspirated 4.7-litre V8, ‘Skyhook’ adaptive damping and a smooth six-speed ZF transmission. Most impressive for this kind of car is the space on offer though – this is no mere nod to a four-seater, you can genuinely take three other adults along without anyone having to remove their lower limbs, which is nice. And let’s not forget that, with the roof dropped, you can not only enjoy the feel of a million miles of sky overhead, but you can revel in that glorious V8 soundtrack. Shared with the Alfa Romeo 8C, it’s one of the finest sounding engines ever made. If you have even a drop of petrol in your veins, then the howl as you approach the redline is about as addictive as anything gets.
Presented in excellent overall condition, in a handsome and desirable specification with a great history and low mileage, we think this would be perfect for next year’s summer trips. But why wait for summer? Take it out on a nice, crisp winter’s day, when the sun is shining and the air is cold and dense, drop the top and bask in the unmistakable bellow of eight cylinders of fire and fury. In our mind, that’s about as good as motoring gets.

Exterior
- Handsome and restrained silver paintwork suits the car’s elegant lines beautifully, and presents in very good condition, with a few minor blemishes and stone chips, but nothing inappropriate to the car’s age and mileage
- The bodywork itself looks to be in excellent order, with no damage, clean lines, even panel gaps and no corrosion we could discern
- Usual potential problem areas such as the door shuts, sills and wheel arches all look very tidy and in fine condition
- Similarly, the external badging and trim is all present and correct, with no warping, cracking or significant wear we could see
- Underneath, the floor pans and sills look to be straight an undamaged
- We love the dark blue, triple-layer canvas roof that matches the interior and contrast well with the paintwork
- The roof is electrically operated and can be raised or lowered at speeds below 19mph
- The seller advises us that there is a small nick in the roof canvas which can be repaired, but he hasn’t got around to it, as the car is always kept in a garage
- The bi-xenon headlamps and rear light clusters look clear and clean, with no chips or cracks we could identify
- The car rides on the correct multi-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels, which look to be in good order, with no kerb damage, just a little bubbling in a couple of places and some light wear to the centre caps
- A matched set of Pirelli P-Zero tyres is fitted – 245/35 to the front and 285/35 to the rear – they appear to be in good order with nice tread depth, with just the sidewall of the NSF tyre showing a few chips to the rubber

Summary
We have a feeling that the Maserati Grancabrio is going to be regarded as one of the all-time great four-seat convertibles. We can’t think of any other four-seat drop-tops that offer the same level of Italian style, with such a beautifully appointed cabin and the kind of powertrain that has you constantly seeking out tunnels or hitting the ‘down’ paddle.
This example has clearly been cherished too, presented as it is in lovely condition with a great service record and low mileage. The silver-over-blue specification, especially when paired with the blue canvas roof too, is classically subtle, elegant and deeply desirable.
If you’re in the market for a sonorous, charismatic convertible, the sort that turns every journey into a true event, then you won’t get much better than this.
