Overview

Mazda shifted its own goalposts with the 2005 ‘NC’ generation of MX-5 – a car that took the raw, basic and simple appeal of the original first and second-generation cars and introduced new levels of comfort and refinement to the model, while retaining the pin-sharp driving characteristics that defined it.

It was a gamble that paid off, with the MX-5 being the UK’s best-selling sports car throughout the model’s life.

Taking styling cues from the distinctive Ibuki concept car shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2003, the NC gained a further boost to refinement in 2007 with the launch of the PRHT models – which stood for Power Retractable Hard Top. The PRHT had a roof similar to that of the Mercedes-Benz SLK, which raised and lowered at the touch of a button, meaning buyers got the best of both worlds – a terrific, fun-to-drive roadster in the summer and a cosy yet sharp-steering coupé for the winter months.

Not that this example has seen much of winter. A genuine low mileage car, it had just two owners prior to the vendor, who acquired it three years ago. He’s cherished the car and kept it garaged but has decided he needs something more practical so is selling the Mazda and his daily hatchback to cover the cost.

It’s a great specification – a Sport Tech with black leather upholstery, heated seats and a BOSE stereo system – and is in fantastic overall order. Whoever gets their hands on this stunning example of the NC MX-5 is not going to be disappointed.
