Overview

Replacing a legend is never easy, but in 2005, Mazda scored a bullseye with its first completely new MX-5 since the model debuted in 1989.

The MX-5 ‘NC’ was the third generation of the model, but the first to be developed on an entirely new platform, as opposed to the Mk2, which was a heavily revised Mk1. It took styling cues from the distinctive Ibuki concept car shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2003.

Just like its forebear, the NC was a brilliant car to drive – agile, responsive and with a delightfully balanced rear-wheel-drive chassis.

This example is an absolute stunner. It was bought by the vendor in 2014 when it was two-and-a-half years old, but had covered just 200 miles from new. It was bought from a Mazda dealership, and had been a demonstrator when new.

The vendor bought it to use as a summer car, for high days and holidays rather than everyday use, which explains its incredible low mileage of less than 12,500 miles from new. Yet despite having the mileage of a 12-month old example, the MX-5 has been serviced far more frequently, mostly at main dealerships in accordance with the annual service schedule, the exception being during the Covid-19 pandemic when the car was barely used.

Much as he adores the Mazda, the vendor accepts that advancing years mean he can’t enjoy it as much as he used to, so the car is being sold to make way for a more practical replacement. It’s a superb example for collectors – the condition is almost as-new, with it having been diligently looked-after for all of its life.

Summary

Put simply, you’ll struggle to find another Mk 3 MX-5 that’s anything like this one – condition-wise, it’s almost as-new, with very little evidence of use and in stunning order throughout.

Despite the minimal mileage, the owner has truly cared for it, ensuring it has been serviced properly for all of its life, so it’s no surprise to find that it appears to be just as good mechanically as it looks to be in the metal. A phenomenally good example of an increasingly popular modern classic sports car.
