Overview

Jekyll and Hyde: there’s no other way to describe the personality of BMW’s thumping V8-powered F10 M5. It’s a super saloon in the mould of every M5 before it – out-and-out power in a discreet executive bodyshell, but unlike its forebears the F10 generation has a modesty about it.

Introduced in 2012 to replace the madcap V10 E60 M5, the new model answered some of the criticisms of the older car, such as its unpredictable SMG transmission and the huge running costs associated with what was – admittedly – a glorious 10-cylinder engine.

Yet despite seeming a more sober affair both on paper and in appearance, the F10 was a car that was well and truly in touch with its roots. The M5 had grown up, but it hadn’t grown stale.

Under the F10’s bonnet is a 552bhp twin-turbo V8. A 4.4-litre unit that feeds its power to the rear wheels (of course…) via a seven-speed sequential clutchless transmission. It’s so sharp that the changes pass in the blink of an eye – from a standstill, it’ll hit 100mph in just 7.8 seconds, and 60mph in just 4.4.

It’s a car that will leave you gurning with G forces if you open it up, yet if you find yourself stuck in the confines of a busy city it’s a docile as a normal 5-series. No heavy gear shifts or fussy hot idle like M5s of yore, just a car that does what every 5er has always excelled at, by being a damned fine executive saloon.

It’s these bipolar tendencies that make the F10 generation of M5 so desirable. It’s one of the best performance saloons you can buy, but also one without much in the way of compromise.

This one is a four-owner car, with 51k on the clock and a full BMW service history and the option of the reassurance provided by warranty cover to May 2025. It’s also believed by the vendor to be a BMW Individual commission, built to order with Space Grey paintwork and a distinctive cream interior. It’s a 2014 ‘LCI’ model, which also means it has an improved interior and infotainment interface. It’s totally standard apart from an exhaust back box resonator delete done by Modstock. This means you get fabulous burbles and backfiring and just the right amount of exhaust noise – definitely earning the PH seal of approval.

Summary

If you want to experience one of the most incredible sports saloons of the modern era, then you’ve just found it. The F10 generation of M5 might be subtle in its appearance, but it’s not shy of delivering the thrills when you ask it to, and this example is an absolute corker, finished in an amazing colour scheme and blessed with a low mileage and an impressive maintenance history, it’s a fabulous machine that currently represents incredible value for money.

This was a car that cost its original owner the lion’s share of £100,000 – you can get your hands on it for a much smaller amount, and it’s an absolute gem.
